Homeless man shot by police in Walthamstow to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court
A homeless man who was shot by police is due to appear in court next week.
Gheorghe Anitoae, 43, of no fixed address, will appear for a preliminary hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday to face a charge of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
Mr Anitoae appeared at Thames Magistrates Court on Monday but they have only just released his next court date.
Armed police swooped on Hale End Road in Walthamstow shortly after 8.20pm on August 20 after two calls from members of the public reporting a man carrying a gun in the street.
Police challenged the suspect and then shot him in the arm near a bus stop opposite Lamorna Close, off Hale End Road.
Mr Anitoae was discharged from hospital on Friday and taken into police custody.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are currently appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.
IPCC commissioner, Sarah Green, said: “I would urge anyone who may have been in Hale End Road, Walthamstow from around 8.15pm on Tuesday, 20 August who may hold information which would assist our investigation to get in touch with the IPCC on 0800 096 9073 or Hale_End@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.”
