The manager of a mouse-infested takeaway has admitted he failed to meet basic hygiene standards.

Double Pizza and China Golden Gate in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, was closed down by Waltham Forest council to protect the public at the end of last month after inspectors found mouse droppings in food containers and dangerous bacteria.

The takeaway was only allowed to re-open after it met strict hygiene guidelines.

Shop manager Suleman Sulu, 25, insisted food served from his takeaway was safe, but admitted there had been problems.

He said: “There was nothing wrong with the food or preparation area. We had a water leak in the basement which results in dampness and holes in the wall but no food was stored down there.

"We were told by inspectors that the root of the mice problem came from the basement so we have now made repairs and plastered and sealed the walls."

"When I started six months ago there were hygiene problems because it wasn’t being managed properly.

"I feel the problems with the basement have been resolved, my staff have gone through the necessary health and safety training and it is safe, clean and tidy."

Despite the outlet being allowed to re-open on January 28, the council plans to prosecute the business and said it will be categorised as  ‘high risk’ business until inspectors are satisfied.
