A social club for deaf people which was forced out of Waltham Forest due to high rents has held its first session at its new home.

Forest Deaf Club, previously known as Walthamstow Deaf Club, is now based at Uplands Social Club in Green Walk, Woodford Bridge, and opened its doors for the first time on Wednesday.

The club, whch offers workshops, a library and free support and advice, was formally based at Orford Social Club in Orford Road, Walthamstow, but a monthly rent of £360 was not affordable.

More than 70 people attended the opening night at the new venue, including deputy mayor of Redbridge Cllr Tania Solomon and her husband David.

Club secretary Jackie Benson said: "The move to Redbridge from Waltham Forest has proven to be very beneficial to the club and its members, as Redbridge council has a good reputation for their duty of care to its disabled residents and voluntary social groups.

"Cllr Solomon was very helpful in providing contacts and offered us all a warm welcome to the borough. Our deepest thanks, however, go to Terry Pearce for offering Uplands Social Club as a venue for the new Deaf Club."

Forest Deaf Club meets every fortnight on Wednesday between 7pm and 10pm.
