An event to mark the completion of refurbishment work in a rundown area has been cancelled.

The celebration tomorrow afternoon at Bakers Arms organised by Waltham Forest council was set to feature live music and other entertainment after £3.3million was spent on improvements.

But electrical problems in the area mean large-scale works by UK Power Networks must take place, which could cause disruption.

A spokesman for the electrical company said: "UK Power Networks would like to apologise for the disruption caused by the emergency repairs in Lea Bridge Road, which have impacted on the planned event on Wednesday.

"We were alerted to a power distribution problem in the area on March 20 and have been working to replace a vital piece of equipment that will help maintain a safe and secure electricity supply for the future.

"Unfortunately the location of the fault has made the work more complicated than we would have liked."

The event is to be rescheduled later in the year.
