An all-girls school in Walthamstow has achieved its best ever GCSE results this year.

Walthamstow School for Girls' headteacher, Meryl Davies, expressed her "extreme pride" as pupils collected exam results from the school in Church Hill.

There were concerns that pass rates would dip as continual assessment and coursework were replaced by end-of-year exams in some subjects.

Ms Davies said: “We had our best ever results this year at a time of turbulence.

"Despite the national picture we have done extremely well and I am very pleased for all of the students.

“This year we have a 73 per cent pass rate for pupils achieving A* to C grades, including maths and English.

“Thirty-five pupils achieved five or more A* grades. I am absolutely delighted.”

The school's results dipped in 2012 with 56 per cent of pupils achieving A* to C grades, but it rose to 70 per cent last year.

English was one of the subjects affected by the changes and 88 per cent of pupils at Walthamstow School for Girls achieved grade C or above in English language and 90 per cent in English literature.
