The name of a new town square was revealed this weekend at a celebration ceremony.

The Light Night event took place on Saturday throughout the afternoon and evening to mark the finishing of the Better Barkingside scheme, with the square being lit up by hundreds of colourful lanterns in the evening.

The £2 million project created a new park and town square and in High Street, Barkingside.

Labour cabinet member of planning and regeneration, Cllr Helen Coomb, announced the result of the public vote for the new square’s name was Ken Aston Square at 3pm.

Ken Aston was headteacher of Newbury Park School and took charge of the 1963 FA Cup Final.

Aston is widely believed to have introduced yellow and red cards and organised the referees at the 1966, 1970 and 1974 World Cups.

He died in October 2001.

The event also included an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, and performances by rock band The Novelty and Redbridge Music Lounge.

Refreshments were also available from stalls.
