Ongar town council have gathered four supermarket trolleys alongside over 10 bags of waste following their latest litter pick.

The council called for volunteers last week after discovering an 'alarming' amount of litter in the town.

The event focused on the southern end of the town in the Greensted ward due to a significant amount of rubbish on the streets.

A team of seven councillors and volunteers gathered seven bags of recycling, three bags of waste, one box of glass, four Sainsbury's trolleys and various pieces of metals.

The rubbish was removed by volunteer Alan Brett who sorted it for recycling.

Council chairman councillor Diana Roberts said: “The council holds two volunteer litter picking events each year.

"While there is certainly less litter on the streets than on previous occasions this is the first time we have had to retrieve any trolleys from the brook.

“As always the council is grateful to all the volunteers, especially Mr Brett, for assisting us with this project.

Ongar Town Council are urging anyone who sees abandoned trolleys around the town to call the manager at Sainsbury’s, Chris Pearle, on 01277 366917, for collection.
