A primary school in special measures unveiled a £10,000 climbing frame today.

The new climbing frame, designed by Year 4 children in April, was unveiled this morning at Snaresbrook Primary School, in Meadow Walk, South Woodford.

Funded by donations from the PTA and companies connected to the school, it was built over the summer holidays by Play Direct UK.

Executive headteacher Carel Buxton spoke said: "It is a huge success and the children adore it, it will be great for their fitness as not many walk or cycle to school these days.

“This is part of a campaign to listen to what children want, they told us they wanted a new climbing frame because the last one had fallen into disrepair and had been neglected."

The school looked set to be taken out of local authority control and turned into an academy after being placed in special measures in June last year.

But parents and Redbridge council campaigned against the move, arguing measures were already in place to address the problems.

The proposal was then dropped and in December the school registered the fourth most improved test results in the borough.

An Ofsted report in June said improvements had been sustained and Ms Buxton expects the school to be taken out of special measures this term.

She said: “This school should never have gone into special measures as it has fantastic resources and is in a beautiful setting.

“But it has been going really well and we have changed our focus towards the children and what they want, the children have behaved excellently and I am proud of them.

"We are hoping to hear this term whether the school has been successful, and if it is then we will hold a celebration party."
