A planning group passionate about literacy has launched a crowdfunding page to install Little Free Libraries in Highams Park.

The Kickstarter page set up by the Little Free Library Project (LFLP) and The Highams Park Plan Art and Culture Group (ARC) aims to raise £300, enough to build and install one of three potential box libraries in the area.

LFL is based on the concept of promoting literacy and the love of reading through free community book exchanges, first initiated in America by Todd Bol from Wisconsin.

Walthamstow became the UK birthplace earlier this year after former residents Nick and Rebecca Cheshire tweeted the idea upon their return from the US State of Georgia, and were inundated with support from E17-based artists.

Kickstarter runs on all-or-nothing basis with backers' credit cards only being charged once the project reaches its funding goal.

The goal is currently set at £300 but they hope to raise £900 to guarantee the installation of three LFL's.

ARC Member Thomas Hardy of Beech Hall Crescent in Highams Park helped organise a book stall at Sunday's Farmers' Market where the group raised over £100, taking the total past £230.

He said: "It's such a great project which captures peoples' imagination and has immense popularity in Walthamstow.

"On the face of it, it’s simple yet powerful. Exchanging books for free is a very simple idea but has the power to bring the community together with no barriers."

The LFLP and ARC have until October 26 to meet the £300 target.

There is cluster of 14 libraries in Waltham Forest with twelve in Walthamstow, and one in both Leyton and Leytonstone.
