A Romanian family squatting in a disused Guide hut have been evicted and the building demolished.

The family moved into the dilapidated hut, which is owned by Chingford Guides, five months ago in the hope of making it their permanent home, but were officially turfed out yesterday.

Police visited the land in King's Head Hill to monitor the eviction process and assist in escorting them off the premise.

According to reports on social media, a JCB entered the site to knock it down.

The Girlguiding Association's efforts to sell the land had been halted by the illegal occupation.

Rostas Hercule, 40, and his family had been served a notice to quit on two occasions but remained there,  claiming they had discovered it whilst sleeping rough in a people-carrier inside Walthamstow's Lidl car park.

Mr Hercule told the Guardian he had carried out major repair works to make the condemned building liveable which included a dining area with double beds, a sofa, table and chairs and a flat screen TV.

The charity decided to sell this land to raise funds to help more girls to benefit from the opportunities guiding offers.
