The six designs for “natural” play equipment in a popular beauty spot have been revealed, as the consultation was launched yesterday.

People are being asked for their feedback on proposals to install the facilities at Hollow Pond, in Whipps Cross Road, Leytonstone.

The £30,000 project, funded by Waltham Forest council, has developed six designs, which will now be put out to public consultation.

Because of the City of London Corporation-owned site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), traditional play equipment is deemed to not suitable.

Waltham Forest council deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, Cllr Clyde Loakes, said: “It’s important that we are sensitive to the environment, while at the same time looking to meet the needs of residents and encouraging them to use the forest and take advantage of local beauty spots like Hollow Pond.”

Of the six proposed designs, three will be installed on three sites to the east of Hollow Pond.

They include a hop, skip and jump, and a climbing stack, all made of logs.

Alderman Gordon Haines, chairman of the Epping Forest and commons committee at the City of London Corporation, said: “We hope this recreation area at Hollow Pond, one of the Forest’s most popular locations, will encourage families to get out and enjoy all Epping Forest has to offer.”

Residents can also attend a public drop-in session on Saturday between 10am and 2pm at St John the Baptist Church in Church Lane, Leytonstone.

The play equipment is due to be installed by early April.

The consultation will be held until February 9 and the online questionnaire can be accessed here.
