A new secondary school due to open in September is set to be over-subscribed, its headteacher believes.

David Grant of the Ongar Academy said he is confident applications will exceed the 120 places available by the deadline on Saturday.

He refused to give an exact figure for applications received, but said at the current rate some children would miss out.

Pupils living closest to the school in Fyfield Road will be given priority.

Two open days were recently held at the school site.

Mr Grant said: “Our open days have been incredibly successful with well over 500 in attendance.

“This demonstrates the undeniable demand for secondary school places.”

The academy also held a staff recruitment fair in Epping, with more than 70 teachers and support staff reportedly attending.

“Nearly 200 highly qualified staff have registered online with us and I have no doubt we will be spoilt for choice,” Mr Grant added.

Applications for the Ongar Academy can be made online, and information can be requested from info@theongaracademy.org or by phoning 01277 286 255.
