A 42-year-old woman has been arrested by police investigating a fatal hit and run, as the victim is named by police.

The woman was held yesterday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and perverting the course of justice after a 53-year-old man was killed at the junction between Latchford Place and Romford Road, in Chigwell.

The victim has been named as Rogacs Mihaly, a Hungarian national living in Leyton.

Mr Mihaly was pronounced dead at 3.46am on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination held yesterday at the East Ham Mortuary found that he died as the result of serious head and neck injuries.

The arrested woman has been released on bail until late March and police continue to appeal for witnesses and information about the collision.

Detective sergeant Helen Lambert said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to speak with police.

“I would also like to hear from anyone who saw a Volkswagen, possibly a Touareg in the area.

“Whilst this vehicle may not have been involved in the collision, I am eager to speak with the driver.

"I would also like to speak with anyone in the repair industry who has recently been approached by the owner of a vehicle that has frontal or windscreen damage."

Following the crash, people living in Latchford Place condemned the junction as unsafe.

Susan Butler, 62, of Latchford Place, said a new footpath on the other side of Romford Road was encouraging pedestrians to make a dangerous crossing.

She said: “There is a safe crossing down the road, why put that footpath there?

“If you see people crossing this road, it is ridiculous, so ridiculous.”

Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to contact police on 020 8597 4874, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
