A primary school has gone up in the estimations of Ofsted inspectors after officially becoming a trust, a new report has shown.

Walthamstow’s Sybourn Primary School has been rated as ‘good’ by the school inspectors after an inspection was held last month.

In 2012 the school was given one of the lower ratings, with performance rated as ‘satisfactory’.

The school then joined the Lion Academy Trust in 2013.

An inspection was carried out at the school in Sybourn Road on June 4 and 5, and revealed a good rating overall with ‘outstanding’ aspects.

Executive Principal, Hayden Tyers, said: “We knew the scale of the challenge we would have to conquer to make this the local primary school of choice.

“This latest judgement from Ofsted under the new inspection regime is validation of all the focus, effort and commitment staff have put into turning this school around.

“I am particularly proud of the way pupils responded to and engaged with the Inspection team and their ability to clearly explain what they were learning and why was integral to this judgement being achieved.”

Sybourn’s leadership and management was praised with the lead inspector stating: “Outstanding leadership from leaders and governors has brought about rapid improvement from when the school became an academy.

“Teaching has improved greatly since the school became an academy. Teachers have received all necessary support to ensure teaching is consistently good. They have high expectations of pupils and make clear to them exactly what they are learning.”

Justin James, CEO of the Lion Academy Trust, said: “We know there are no shortcuts to creating outstanding schools and Mr Bocchi (the head of school) and his team have rightly been identified as a key element of why Sybourn has turned the corner and is well on the way to being an outstanding school.

“I would like to thank parents and the community for continuing to show their faith in the Trust and the team at Sybourn as we make this school the wonderful centre of teaching and learning.”

To achieve outstanding overall the school was asked to make praise and rewards for good behaviour consistent and check if pupils improve after guidance is given.

Sybourn Primary has 630 pupils.

Since converting to become an academy, the Lion Academy Trust has secured an additional £750,000 of funding.
