Firefighters evacuated 50 people from a blaze at a three-storey block of flats in Barkingside in the early hours of this morning (August 28).

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters attended the block of flats in Pershore Close when London Fire Brigade were called at 2.47am.

The fire, which is believed to have started in the roof of the top floor flat, was brought under control by 4.05am.

This flat and part of the roof was damaged by the blaze.

Nigel McCormick, area watch manager for London Fire Brigade, said: “A man noticed the fire in his loft and quickly called the brigade.

“But he remained in his flat until crews arrived and we’d like to remind people that if there’s a fire in your home, get out, stay out and dial 999.

“Fire crews and police evacuated the block as a precaution due to the possibility of the roof collapsing.

“Thankfully no one was injured.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
