A GUERRILLA gardener is asking for help in her quest to get rid of a nasty, fast-spreading weed.

The Wanstead Community Gardeners (WCG) are holding two sessions this week to crack down on the spread of Fleabane Bash around Christchurch Green.

WCG founder Marian Temple said: “Fleabane Bash is an alien species that has only come about in the last few years.

“But it seeds very quickly and spreads very fast.

“Most people don’t know what it is, and because it has flowers on it, they think it’s something they’ve planted, but it’s actually a nasty weed.

“The more people that know about it the better, then they can pull it out where it’s growing in our public green spaces and in their own gardens.”

Ms Temple explained that although Redbridge Council sprays parts of Wanstead with chemicals to stop weeds like Fleabane growing, it can often already be too late.

She added: “The council does spray, but with their set up they often catch them too late, once the seeds have already spread.

“This week will be a bit of an educational tour, so people can identify Fleabane and get rid of it to help keep things looking lovely and tidy.

“It’s going to be good fun, especially for the little ones."

Marian’s Fleabane tours of Christchurch Green will take place tomorrow (Tuesday July 26) and Thursday (July 28) evening at 6.30pm starting at the public toilets in Woodbine Place.
