THREE illegal foreign workers were discovered by immigration officials in a raid on a restaurant.

Officers swooped on the Village Kitchen in Orford Road, Walthamstow, on Friday evening, April 21.

Two Albanian nationals were arrested and detained pending their removal from the UK. A 27-year-old man had overstayed his visa and a 20-year-old woman had entered the country illegally.

A third Albanian national, a 26-year-old woman, was escorted from the restaurant by officers who found she had an outstanding immigration application which did not entitle her to work.

She was ordered to report regularly to Immigration Enforcement while her case is pending.

The restaurant, which was opened by Spiros Ragavelas in 1997.

He will be fined £60,000 if he cannot prove pre-employment checks were carried out on the workers.

The business is described as “uncomplicated European dishes in soft hued room of cream leather chairs”.

A statement on its website says: “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well (in Walthamstow Village).”

When the Guardian contacted the restaurant for a comment they hung up the phone.
