A CREATIVE challenge to inspire people to share what they love about their area has been launched as part of the ‘borough of culture’ bid.

Redbridge Council has set a series of daily creative challenges throughout this week, to show diversity and creativity of the people of Redbridge.

There will be a new challenge every day and community groups and individual residents can take part, uploading their creations to thisisredbridge.org/challengeredbridge or upload it to social media using the hashtags #ThisIsRedbridge and #ChallengeRedbridge.

As part of the first challenge, on Monday, people shared selfies or drew pictures of the things they love doing.

Tuesday's (todays) challenge asks people to share a photo of what they love about Redbridge, e.g. a landmark.

The following challenges will be published online on the day.

The deadline to apply to be borough of culture is on December 1, so organisers are keen to gather ideas and build a bid that will “capture the judges imaginations” and win the contest.

The council is now in phase two, trying to gather support from organisations and communities to amplify Redbridge’s bid.

It is working with organisation 64 Million Artists who are helping them in their campaign.

The London Borough of Culture Award will see the capital’s boroughs compete for up to £2.8 million in funding spread over two years, 2019 and 2020.

In February 2018, two winning boroughs will be named London Borough of Culture, one taking up the title in 2019 and the other in 2020. Each will receive a guaranteed fund of £1.1 million.

In addition, a further £600,000 will be made available to six additional boroughs for exemplary individual projects.

Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, said: “This is a huge opportunity for Redbridge.

"It’s a chance to shine a spotlight on the borough. A chance to tell our stories and celebrate our special places.

"A chance to show that the sum of our diverse communities is so much greater than its parts. It’s a unique opportunity to show London and the world: This Is Redbridge.

“Our borough is a treasure trove of hidden stories and cultural gems and there’s already huge local support for the bid.

"People can see that this is an opportunity to do something special and create a legacy of culture at the heart of our borough’s future.”
