It wasn’t until 1.30am on Sunday that Boy Jones Jnr stepped into the ring to face Antonio Horvatic at Wembley Arena but the Chingford boxer wasn’t affected by the delay, believing he produced the best performance of his burgeoning career.

The 18-year-old comfortably defeated his Croatian opponent on points, 40-36, but was forced to wait until the early hours of the ‘Man vs Machine’ show as all of the other fights on the card went the distance.

“I was a floater so I didn’t know when I would be going out there,” Jones explained. “I was gloved up after the first fight and that was at about 5pm.

“It was frustrating waiting around because I just wanted to be in the ring and showing what I could do.

“It was worth the wait in the end though, because I think it was my best fight today. I managed it well and boxed properly.

“I used my brain and was thinking a lot. I wasn’t looking for the knock-out punch because that isn’t really boxing. I was being smart and I showed my class.”

Jones is unbeaten in his five fights, four of which have been victories. He has enjoyed a quick rise to prominence since taking up the sport only two years ago and has performed at the 02 Arena, plus in addition to three appearances at Wembley.

However, he said he has found no venue daunting and explained: “It’s always great performing at the big arenas but at as long as it has got a ring it doesn’t really matter where you are.

“The ring is where I do my job. That doesn’t change because it is in a fancy location. You don’t see a postman celebrating because he’s delivering post to David Beckham’s house for instance. He just does his job. It’s the same for me.”

Jones, who says Ricky Hatton is his boxing icon, will enjoy a short holiday in Spain before he begins preparation for his next fight.

He is set to compete on Thursday, November 19 at the Prince Regent Hotel in this native Chingford.

“I am looking forward to that fight already,” he said. “I am hoping we will get a big crowd because it will be in Chingford.

“The Prince Regent is a great venue. It’s very different to Wembley because it is a lot smaller but I will enjoy that.

“The fight should also be over six rounds too which will be another step up for me," he said. "Hopefully I can rise to the challenge.”
