Posted on 2:30pm Thursday 19th February 2009

It may be cold outside, but tucked up in a warm corner of the Epicentre, an enthusiastic group meets to plan this year’s Leytonstone Festival.

Come to Walthamstow...

Posted on 12:20pm Wednesday 11th February 2009

...but not if you have anything good to bring or money to spend! And if you live here, go away. That’s Waltham Forest council’s message, as far as I can work it out. While our amenities are closing down all around us, the council is eager to provide new ones – unwanted by local people -- for groups from outside the area.

Save our sole cinema

Posted on 3:49pm Friday 6th February 2009

What would you like to have in the heart of Walthamstow? A magnificent Art Deco cinema surrounded by shops and cafes, or a centre for a controversial religious group surrounded by traffic-choked streets?

The milk must get through

Posted on 3:07pm Wednesday 4th February 2009

When I looked out at the snowy landscape on Monday morning, there was already one set of footprints up to my door. Dustmen, recyclers, even buses were out of action – but, as always, the milkman had got through.

True grit in Walthamstow this winter

Posted on 3:11pm Wednesday 4th February 2009

There was plenty of sign of true grit in Walthamstow over the last few snowy days. Just none, sadly, displayed by the council.

"If I can't figure it out, what's a tourist meant to do?

Posted on 1:03pm Wednesday 28th January 2009

Whacky routes. That's what you get from Transport for London (TfL)'s journey planner, as I found out recently when on a trip with Radio 4's Peter White.

Official honour for William Morris supporter

Posted on 11:16am Thursday 8th January 2009

Congratulations to Peter Cormack, who received an MBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to art and heritage. It’s a fitting reward for a man who has dedicated his working life to the service of Walthamstow, as keeper of the William Morris Gallery. And it’s pleasing that the government itself has recognized the value of his work.

Failure! Horror! Catastrophe! Calamity!

Posted on 10:43am Thursday 8th January 2009

Well, not really. It's actually just a slightly late blog because I was tied up trying to finish off the two stories I managed to dig out of Tuesday's planning meeting.

I've destroyed a work of art!

Posted on 1:44pm Friday 2nd January 2009

That title sounds dramatic, until you realise it was graffiti - by that upstart young Cartrain, no less. You see, a group of neighbours from Ferndale Area Residents Association are dedicated to keeping "our patch" clean. We hold regular litter picks, and paint over or wipe out graffiti. And last time out, I erased some of Cartrain's work. A sprayed "bomb" with George Bush's head in it was among the unsightly decor on a wall near to Leytonstone High Road overground station - and we painted over everything that was there.

Leytonstone Christmas Market makes fake Lapland look impressive.

Posted on 3:54pm Thursday 11th December 2008

This year, there's a market in Leytonstone. Fantastic! It was promoted on the council's website as part of the "turning on the lights" Christmas events, and it runs for two weeks, from 8am to 8pm each day.
