The curse of Waltham Forest

Worried about black magic and evil spirits? Or just worried about people pushing cards through your door claiming to deal with these? Either way, Waltham Forest council may have an answer for you -- a predictably useless answer, needless to say.

I’ve had dozens of business cards and flyers coming through my door, often from people calling themselves sheikh, professor or doctor. They claim to be able to lift curses, bring back straying lovers and cure sickness. The one beside me as I write is from someone who’s also “capable of solving all psychological, financials, socials and academic problems” (though obviously grammar is a bit tricky).

Like the three-card tricksters on the High Street, these conmen can only make money from gullible people. But I disagree with those who say it’s tough luck on anyone foolish enough to fall victim. Being gullible isn’t a crime, and if people are desperate they need a helping hand, not a rip-off.

Councils are meant to tackle people selling bogus services. So one day I collected a pile of these flyers and took them to Waltham Forest’s trading standards department.

The council officer who looked at them said nothing could be done. “But they’re selling services they can’t possibly provide,” I objected.

“How do you know they can’t?” she asked, visibly inconvenienced by the amount of time I was taking out of a quiet afternoon. I said: “Because they’re claiming to lift curses, make people love you and cure all disease. No one can do that.”

Triumphantly, she shot back her killer response -- “But you can’t prove that they can’t do it!”

So now, in the wonderful world of Waltham Forest where all things are possible, I’m looking for someone to make our council love Walthamstow. I know that’s a big job compared with curing all disease and casting out evil spirits. But come on, Professor Dr Sheikh – I’ve got a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to pay you.

Don't be so negative, Janet; if we've got people with these gifts living in the Borough, we should get them on to the Council, and solve all our problems
PS I'm really chuffed that the Council has at least one employee gifted in logic: it's one more than I suspected.

I am so glad Janet I am not the only one who collects the cards of these wonderful chaps who such are an inspiration to humanity. Maybe we could play Marabout Poker?

I call your three curse-lifting tricksters who can find straying lovers and raise with a hand that can cure acne, ensure exam success, guarantee the outcome of litigation and solve the "problems of all nations" without needing more than a discount printer, a PO box number and a mobile phone. Don't try to bluff though - for a small fee I expect soon to be able to see all your cards.

I agree with you Janet, I had one through the door just the other day, and when I went outside to throw it in the recycling the deliverer spotted me and came back looking optimistic. I just called over to him "It says NO LEAFLETS - you can't read!"

However I have recently created a website for a clairvoyant (in the course of my webdesign business) - and she was very keen to ensure the T&Cs were correct. Apparently these days you cannot advertise these kinds of services without clauses such as "provided for entertainment purposes only". Surely these curse-removal adverts need to carry similar wording?

This is the SAME sham as is used by all the religions.
"You can't prove a negative" - so WE are going to bully you about ...."

Welcome to the world of "faith".
Otherwise known as unreason.

Don't waste your money, Techno -- my man *guarantees* me success in all endeavours!

But why limit their abilities to a game of cards? As mdj says, we should get them on the council. They could even use their powers to find where all our money goes.

Speaking of conmen who prey on the gullible, have you seen this article today about the head of the UKCG in Brazil being charged with fraud and money laundering. It's wonderful that we have such upstanding people investing in Walthamstow. Their riches have worked wonders on the EMD.
