Waltham Forest, big on envirocrime

Waltham Forest council has discovered the environment, heaven be praised. Are they composting market waste, expanding the recycling service or even using the fleet of electric vehicles they bought years ago? No – they’re threatening to fine people who ‘damage’ trees by pinning up lost-pet adverts.

Still, the council is sure to support the genuinely green efforts of Blackhorse Action Group, whose Harvest Celebration this Saturday includes apple pressing, composting and making plans for a community garden. Isn’t it? No, you guessed again – the council’s impressively titled ‘head of enforcement environment and regeneration’ has threatened BAG with legal action for advertising this innocent local event on nearby trees.

Can this be the same Waltham Forest council that cuts down trees to save the cost of maintaining them (see www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/wfnews/4544163.WALTHAMSTOW__Family_s_anger_at_tree_felling/)?

The same council that dumps the mountain of compostable waste it collects from Walthamstow market into landfill?

The same council that tries to build on playing fields (see www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/wfnews/4517743.LEYTON__Council_will_not_build_on_sports_ground) – the ones it hasn’t sold off?

The same council that launched a consultation this summer about the long-vacant arcade site, which many people hoped to see used as a park – but paved it over even before the end of the consultation period?

The same Waltham Forest where streets have been left unswept till dead rats block the gutters, where library books are sent to the incinerator and public buildings blaze with light all night long?

Yes to all the above. You or I might sympathise with anyone missing their animal companion enough to offer a reward for its safe return. But to Waltham Forest, they’re committing ‘envirocrime’. Though it won’t fund basic services, it can afford to send enforcers round to the grieving pet-owners’ homes.

As BAG points out, the council brutally cuts back our trees during their growing season – to save the expense of cleaning up leaves in autumn? – and some of them are now suffering fungal infections. Instead of issuing threats about harmless drawing pins, the council would do more to protect our trees by simply not assaulting them.

I can understand the reasoning for not wanting our trees or streets festooned with posters - no matter who they are for or what they are promoting. Did you actually go out and see how many of these were put up - i suspect not. Let me tell you then - an awful lot and they made our streets look like a flyposters paradise. If groups or individuals want to put adverts up then get permission first so that we do not have the debacle of residents complaining about something that makes our streets look worst than ever. For your information if you google the lost parrot you will see just how much publicity this parrot has already had so why do we need tons of posters too!!!!

Yes, this is the same LBWF that poisons the plants in my front garden with weedkiller .......
The only "environment" they are interested in are dodgy developments, and deals with crooked "churches" - aren't they Cllr Wheeler?

Copper Mill, I live here and go down these streets every day.

If you don't like flyposting, why aren't you complaining about the huge hoardings leading up to Blackhorse Rd tube station? Under layers of tatty flyposters, these are still advertising Sex And The City -- a film that came and went 18 months ago. Every now and then, bits peel off and fall down. It looks like a cliché of urban decay. For anyone arriving by tube - welcome to Walthamstow!

I don't believe anyone living round here is more offended by lost-pet posters.

Janet1 - I know the story about the hoardings as I have enquired about them and for once this is not the councils fault. I have no problem with a few lost pet posters but this was not a few and you obviously don't travel around walthamstow otherwise you would have seen these posters plastered everywhere. I also know from talking to another parrot owner that the lady who lost the parrot had to pay for an advert in the WF Guardian as they would not put a story in about it, which would have cost nothing. So Janet Wright can you confirm this and if it is right you have no place in criticising anyone. You're paper is just as much money grabbers as the council!!!

Copper Mill, your complaints are getting increasingly desperate! Newspapers don't have any obligation to report on any particular story, and they have to make money to stay in business.

The council, however, is paid by us through taxation, and does have the duty to look after the borough, but it very visibly fails to do this. How you can complain about harmless pet-lovers and the local paper but let the council off the hook is beyond me.

Why do you say the dreadful state of the hoardings beside the tube station are not the council's fault? Waltham Forest council may not own them, but if it cared it could take action against anyone who is causing an eyesore.

Janet1 I take it you are another one of those people who think the council should be responsible for everything. They don't get everything right by a long way but I have a lot more foresight than thinking everything is their fault. As local residents why don't we do something about the advertising boards like contact the advertising company or take them over for local community use. I suspect that this will not hapen as it is all too easy to leave it to somebody else. An eyesore you say and I agree but I also think posters everywhere are an eyesore no matter what they are put up for and the council are just as guilty as anyone by putting up banners everywhere. Yes papers have to make money but they have space in every edition ( I have worked for one) for local interest stories and I didn't see anything of particular local interest in recent editions that would have prevented them running the parrot story.
