Sound Advice: Saving puppies and kittens via the incredible power of music

WALTHAMSTOW'S Plough Inn is hosting a big variety night this week to raise some cash for the Wood Green Animal Shelter, with a DAZZLING array of talented locals set to appear.

Songs, poems and even a bit of comedy are all scheduled for the event on Friday (February 26).

First up is singer songwriter John Arthur at 8pm, followed by radical poet Roger Huddle at 8.30pm.

At 9pm Italian comedian Giacinto Palmieri takes to the stage, followed by fellow funnyman Rob Beckett at 9.15pm.

American laugh-deliverer Chris Coxen performs at 9.30pm, followed by singer songwriter Al Neville at 9.45pm.

At 10.15pm Walthamstow Folk Club legend Russ Chandler gets out his assorted instruments for a few quick tunes, followed by poet and singer Other Theresa at 10.40pm, with the night rounded off by musical everyman Graham Larkbey at 11pm.

Entry is free, but cash donations for the centre are most welcome. Donations of hardback books, DVDs, videos, CDs, unopened pet food and duvets, quilts and blankets are also wanted.

Doors open at 7.30pm.

And on Sunday(February 28) – if the Plough's recovered by then – it's Walthamstow Folk Club's night presenting six-string supremo Martin Simpson, who was recently named as one of the top artists of the decade by Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

Entry is £12, or £11 for concessions, with a start time of 7.30pm.

Monday is March (1) and also free blues jam night at the Plough from 9pm.

Then on Tuesday (March 2) Psychedelic rock band The Green Ray start a new monthly residency at the E17 pub.

At the Standard Music Venue in Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow, this Thursday (February 25) sees a night of unsigned rock band goodness, courtesy of promoters Club Bus Wind.

Scuffed Up Shoes, BNA, Second Impression and Kickstarter are the acts scheduled to perform.

Entry is £5 with a band flyer, or £6 without, and doors open at 8.30pm.

Then on Friday (February 26) the venue hosts tribute act Limehouse Lizzy. Tickets are £12 and doors are at 8.30pm.

Saturday (February 27) sees a headline set from Dirty Santana. Admission is £9 and it gets going at 8.30pm.

It's Open Mic night at Ye Olde Rose and Crown in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, next Wednesday (March 3).

It is free and starts at 8pm.

On Monday (March 1), Waltham Abbey Folk Club has a Singaround night from 8pm. Entry is £1.50p.
