Sound Advice: What's Cookin' is back (kind of)

THE new run of What's Cookin' nights at the North Star pub in Leytonstone kicks off this weekend.

The popular promotions group stopped doing their weekly shows at the nearby Sheepwalk pub earlier this summer, much to the sadness of music fans across the land, but are keeping going with occasional shows at this venue instead.

Folk and country blues solo artist Charlie Parr headlines the new chapter in What's Cookin' history with his set on Sunday (September 5).

Support comes from the acclaimed hillbilly muso Frank Fairfield, who was hand picked by Fleet Foxes to open for them on their 2008 tour.

The show starts at 6pm and entry is free, although donations for the acts are welcome.

The Square in Harlow holds a special show next Wednesday (September 8) when it hosts the 30th anniversary gig of acclaimed performance poet Attila the Stockbroker.

The 'broker's first ever gigs were in Harlow, including a 'Rock Against Thatcher' benefit at the Square way back in 1980.

Support comes from Steve Drewett, Danielz, Paul Howard and Richard Holgarth.

Doors are at 8pm and it costs a fiver.

Entry is strictly for over 16s only.

Rock band From a Great Height headline the Standard in Walthamstow this Thursday (September 2).

Support acts TBC.

Entry is £6, or £5 if you have a band flyer. Doors open at 8.30pm.

Tribute funsters Con Jovi play the venue the day after (Friday September 3).

While Toot and Skamen play on Saturday (September 4).

Each show costs £9 for entry and doors open around 8pm.

Jerry Spangles and Graham Tutton host an Open Mic night at the Plough Inn, on Wood Street in Walthamstow, this Saturday (September 4).

Backline is provided. Acts wanting to play are advised to come early to make their intentions know.

It's free and gets going at 8.30pm.

Blues guitar master Hans Theessink plays the pub on Sunday (September 5) courtesy of Walthamstow Folk Club.

Tickets are £6 on the door, or £5 for concessions. It starts at 7.30pm.

And it's another blues jam night at the Plough on Monday (September 6). It's free and begins at 9pm.

Meanwhile psychedelic rock group The Green Ray are scheduled to play at the venue next Tuesday (September 7) as part of their monthly residency. Further details TBC.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club hosts a Singaround jam night on Monday (September 6).

It costs £1.50p and starts at 8.30pm.
