Sound Advice: Doubts raised over future of Plough Inn

By Daniel Binns »

SOUND Advice begins this week with yet more (possibly) sad news. The future of the Plough Inn, on Wood Street in Walthamstow, has been plunged into doubt.

The pub is one of Waltham Forest's few remaining live music venues, and usually has shows on most nights of the week.

But it has been confirmed that it has been bought by new owners and no-one – not even the pub's current staff and management – knows if it will continue trading as a music venue or even as a pub.

There are lots of rumours swirling round that it will be turned into flats or a restaurant, but sources tell me no firm decision on its future has been made. So fingers crossed.

In the meantime, it's business as usual at the venue. On Thursday (December 8) E17 Jazz hosts the Tori Freestone trio there from 8pm. This widely praised group play a mixture of jazz standards and originals. Entry is £5.

On Saturday (December 10) it's Tunnel Vision's annual Christmas spectacular at the Plough with Graham Larkbey and the Escape Committee. Also on the bill is the fantastic Other Theresa, Johnny Black and The League of Nations and The Spangles Gang. Doors open at 8pm for a 8.30pm start. Entry is free but donations are welcome.

George Papavgeris and Los Marbles play the venue on Sunday (December 11) thanks to Walthamstow Folk Club. It starts at 7.30pm and admission is £6, or £5 for concessions.

Zoe Needs an Ambulance is just one of the acts playing The Standard in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow, on Thursday (December 9).

Other acts include Synex, Nine Blind and Enemy Planet.

The gig is organised by unsigned bands promoters Club Bus Wind and doors open around 8pm. Entry is £5 with a band flyer or £6 without.

Tribute act Absolute Bowie plays on Friday (December 10), with the Weller Collection taking to the stage on Saturday (December 11). Doors for both gigs are at 8pm and entry is £9.

At The Square in Harlow, rockers Trophies of Dahmer headline on Thursday (December 9). Support comes from Vidina, Despite My Deepest Fear and I See Atlantis.

Doors are at around 8pm and entry is £4. Entry is only for those aged 16 and over.

Bossa Nova band Los Otros play Ye Olde Rose and Crown in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, nexst Tuesday (December 14) from 8pm. Entry is free.
