Sound Advice: A fresh take on folk classics

UP and coming young folk singer Louise Jordan plays Loughton Folk Club this week.

Ms Jordan has been gaining a growing reputation on the circuit for her fresh take on classic English folk songs and this show is the latest in a series of gigs she's doing as part of her 2011 UK tour.

The performance is at the Loughton Club in Station Road on Thursday (March 10), with doors opening at 8pm.

Entry is £3, with a £1 discount for club members.

If blues is your thing, head on over to Walthamstow Cricket Club this Monday (March 14) for a show by the Battered Saucepan Blues Band.

The gig at the venue, in Greenway Avenue, is free and you don't have to be a member of the club to attend. Marvellous.

Things will get going around 9pm.

Folk and bluegrass group the Green Rock River Band play the North Star in Leytonstone this Thursday (March 10).

Also playing are Trent Miller and the Skeleton Jive.

The show kicks off about 8pm in the main bar and entry is free – although donations for the acts are welcome.

It's being held courtesy of promoters What's Cookin'.

Then on Saturday (March 12) the pub hosts another foot-stomping night with a gig by rockabilly blues band The Highton Crows.

Support comes from trio The Rejection, who play up-beat banjo and guitar ballads.

This show is also at 8pm and is free.

A Thousand Yells headline the Standard's unsigned band night on Thursday (March 10).

Support comes from Consult the Oracle and Woe to the Conquered.

The show, organised by promoters Club Bus Wind, starts at around 8.30pm.

Entry to the venue, in Walthamstow's Blackhorse Lane, is £5 with a band flyer, or £6 without.

RDB play the Standard on Friday (March 11).

Doors are at 8pm and it costs £8.

On Saturday (March 12) Not the Rolling Stones take to the stage. It costs £9 and begins around 8pm.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club, at the Royal British Legion HQ in Brooker Road, hosts a Singaround jam night on Monday (March 14).

It costs £1.50p and starts at 8.30pm.
