Sound Advice: A week of blues harp, onions and battered saucepans

A singer-songwriter from Yorkshire will be bringing the folk sounds of his home county to east London this Thursday (March 17) when he plays a gig in Leytonstone.

Serious Sam Barrett has received widespread praise since the release of his debut album in 2009, and is sure to create a stir when he headlines the North Star pub in a show organised by local promoters What's Cookin'.

Simon Onions provides support with his 12-string folk psych blues.

The gig starts from 8pm and entry is free.

On Sunday (March 20) harp-playing blues act Little George Sueref plays the venue. Also performing is British country music singer Alan Tyler.

This show begins at 7pm.

Unsigned bands including Pay No Respect, Raising Hell, Shards and Province take to the stage at the Standard Music Venue in Walthamstow this Thursday (March 17).

Organised by promoters Club Bus Wind, doors open around 8pm and entry is £6, or £5 with a band flyer.

Tribute act Bootleg Blondie plays the venue, in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow, on Saturday (March 19). It costs £9 and doors are at eight.

But there's an even bigger gig next Wednesday (March 23) at the Standard when it hosts a headline performance from political comedian Mark Thomas.

Despite having a non-musical stand-up as headliner, bands such as Steve White and the Protest Family and Graham Larkbey and the Escape Committee will also be performing at the show, which is being organised by Walthamstow Folk Club's Russ Chandler.

Money raised goes to fire-fighters in the Fire Brigade Union who went on strike last year following a row with bosses over new shift patterns.

Doors open around 7.45pm and tickets cost £10.

The London Lasses play Walthamstow Folk Club's night at Ye Olde Rose and Crown this Sunday (March 20).

Expect jovial Irish music at the gig, which has an admission price of £8, or £7 for concessions.

Entry for the show, at the pub in Hoe Street, is from around 7.30pm.

On Monday (March 21), the venue hosts the Battered Saucepan Blues Band in its main bar.

The music starts at 9pm and entry is free.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club, which meets at the Royal British Legion HQ in Brooker Road, holds a Singaround jam night on Monday (March 21) on the theme of “spring is sprung”.

Entry costs £1.50p and it starts at 8.30pm.

Bob Collum brings his brand of rootsy power-pop to Loughton Folk Club this Thursday (March 17).

Tickets cost £3 and all money raised goes to the National Autistic Society. There will also be a raffle.

The gig is at the Loughton Club in Station Road, and doors swing open at 8pm.
