The MPs' expenses row rumbles on (and will most likely continue to do so for some time yet) and our Right Honorable Member has refused to apologise over his involvement.

Clyde Loakes is shortly to stand down as Leader of the Council. Many comments on stories in this website wish him good riddance. So in a potentially controversial act, I'd like to consider Clyde's legacy.

After a week's absence, the blog returns with another shameless (or shameful perhaps?) plug for my reporter's surgery.

This week is crucial in the battle to save Waltham Forest’s last cinema. A candlelit vigil is planned outside the Granada/EMD, in Hoe Street, E17, at 8pm on Saturday 18 April – all welcome to join in, and there will be entertainment afterwards.

Now that we have all returned, stuffed full of Easter chocolate and emerging from our Bank Holiday torpor (I say that - I imagine not everyone was torpid. I just like the word) it's all hands on deck. With EAE on holiday and therefore not at the helm (I'm going for a nautical theme here. I like a good extended metaphor) FCR is acting captain, meaning we're a man short and scrambling just a little bit harder than usual.

At last it’s over. The chaotic den opposite my house – Lincolns Public House – is finished. After four years of licence hearings, many hours of lost sleep, one near-fatal stabbing and who knows how many people urinating in the street, the local residents can finally look forward to a peaceful summer. Waltham Forest saw its very own towering inferno on Sunday night (April 5) as a fire swept through a Leyton industrial estate. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries but two warehouses were completely gutted, raining soot, ash and debris onto neighbouring properties and leaving nothing but hollow, blackened shells.

I love students. They can be relied upon for a great many things - not just getting drunk and sporting ill-advised haircuts and/or charity shop purchases, but also getting hot under the collar about political issues and waving placards that reflect this. And this is why I love them this week.

Please get to the Sunday 29 March cinema meeting if you can! It starts at 4.30pm, St. Mary’s School Hall, Rectory Road, Walthamstow. This could be a real chance to rescue Walthamstow town centre.

“We’re wiping out enviro-crime.” This is the bold statement declared on banners across Waltham Forest, accompanied by an anonymous hand wiping out graffiti. "Fly-tipping, littering, graffiti and dog fouling are ruining our borough". In other words, “This borough is being ruined”.

Good news: the plan to open a drug-users' centre in St James Street Library has been dropped. Congratulations to all who protested, at the demo outside the closed library, by email or in this week's crowded community council meeting. But don't relax and think it's all over.

Sometimes, I really think we must be living on the point of the apocalypse - economic collapse, fuel all but gone, death, violence, mayhem.
