SOUND ADVICE: Free gigs are most welcome in times of economic woe

Posted on 11:36am Tuesday 26th May 2009

AS the economy continues to crunch down on us all, and doom continues to rampage through our collective national conscience, it’s always nice to know there’s plenty of free gigs out there to enjoy.

Mo' money, mo' problems

Posted on 5:50pm Wednesday 20th May 2009

The MPs' expenses row rumbles on (and will most likely continue to do so for some time yet) and our Right Honorable Member has refused to apologise over his involvement.

Clyde's legacy

Posted on 11:21am Thursday 7th May 2009

Clyde Loakes is shortly to stand down as Leader of the Council. Many comments on stories in this website wish him good riddance. So in a potentially controversial act, I'd like to consider Clyde's legacy.

Don’t let the renaissance pass Walthamstow by!

Posted on 10:09pm Thursday 16th April 2009

This week is crucial in the battle to save Waltham Forest’s last cinema. A candlelit vigil is planned outside the Granada/EMD, in Hoe Street, E17, at 8pm on Saturday 18 April – all welcome to join in, and there will be entertainment afterwards.

All at sea again

Posted on 10:21am Thursday 16th April 2009

Now that we have all returned, stuffed full of Easter chocolate and emerging from our Bank Holiday torpor (I say that - I imagine not everyone was torpid. I just like the word) it's all hands on deck. With EAE on holiday and therefore not at the helm (I'm going for a nautical theme here. I like a good extended metaphor) FCR is acting captain, meaning we're a man short and scrambling just a little bit harder than usual.

Farewell at last, Lincolns!

Posted on 12:08pm Thursday 9th April 2009

At last it’s over. The chaotic den opposite my house – Lincolns Public House – is finished. After four years of licence hearings, many hours of lost sleep, one near-fatal stabbing and who knows how many people urinating in the street, the local residents can finally look forward to a peaceful summer. However, this has been very hard-earned by the entire community.

Fire and brimstone

Posted on 3:57pm Wednesday 8th April 2009

Waltham Forest saw its very own towering inferno on Sunday night (April 5) as a fire swept through a Leyton industrial estate. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries but two warehouses were completely gutted, raining soot, ash and debris onto neighbouring properties and leaving nothing but hollow, blackened shells.

The protest that wasn't

Posted on 4:33pm Wednesday 1st April 2009

I love students. They can be relied upon for a great many things - not just getting drunk and sporting ill-advised haircuts and/or charity shop purchases, but also getting hot under the collar about political issues and waving placards that reflect this. And this is why I love them this week.

Please get to the Sunday 29 March cinema meeting if you can! It starts at 4.30pm, St. Mary’s School Hall, Rectory Road, Walthamstow. This could be a real chance to rescue Walthamstow town centre.

If we’re going to tackle “Enviro-Crime”, let’s be positive about it!

Posted on 1:40pm Friday 6th March 2009

“We’re wiping out enviro-crime.” This is the bold statement declared on banners across Waltham Forest, accompanied by an anonymous hand wiping out graffiti. "Fly-tipping, littering, graffiti and dog fouling are ruining our borough". In other words, “This borough is being ruined”.

Drug centre plan dropped - for the moment

Posted on 1:05pm Friday 6th March 2009

Good news: the plan to open a drug-users' centre in St James Street Library has been dropped. Congratulations to all who protested, at the demo outside the closed library, by email or in this week's crowded community council meeting. But don't relax and think it's all over.

Doom! Dooooooooooooooom!

Posted on 3:39pm Wednesday 4th March 2009

Sometimes, I really think we must be living on the point of the apocalypse - economic collapse, fuel all but gone, death, violence, mayhem.

A season of privation begins

Posted on 4:31pm Wednesday 25th February 2009

Sadly, we've had no stories of tap dancing ex-KGB grandmothers or globe trotting former elbow disorder sufferers and neither, indeed, have we had any tales of life-saving retired circus monkeys.
