By Daniel Binns »

THE magnificent David Gibb and Elly Lucas return to Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (February 9) after their successful show there last year.

This guitar and violin duo, who were finalists in the 2011 BBC Young Folk Awards, play warming and heart-breaking modern folk, sung with beautiful harmonies. Well worth checking out.

Entry is £3 and doors are at 8pm. It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road.

The Birkbeck Tavern in Leytonstone hosts a double-bill of goodness this weekend.

Welsh Americana band Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog play on Saturday (February 11) from 8.30pm, while rock and rollers Danny and his Champions of the World headline on Sunday (February 12).

Support at the latter gig, which starts around 7pm, comes from folk-blues man Jack Day and scuzz-folk-rock dude Billey Vincent.

Both shows are free but donations to the bands welcome.

Walthamstow Cricket Club has a blues jam night on Monday (February 13) hosted by the Battered Saucepan band.

It gets going from around 8pm and membership of the club, in Greenway Avenue, is not required to attend.

The superb Lucy Ward plays Walthamstow Folk Club on Sunday (February 12).

It's at Ye Olde Rose and Crown pub in Hoe Street and costs £6, or £5 for concessions. Doors open at 7.30pm.

The Geoff Mason Quintet play the East Side Jazz Club at the Lord Rookwood pub in Leytonstone next Tuesday (February 14).

Entry is normally around £5 to £7 and doors are at 8.30pm.
