Sound Advice: Beady eyes on the Standard after its TV appearance

By Daniel Binns »

First off, Sound Advice turns its beady eye to the Standard in Walthamstow, which this week played a starring role on the hit TV comedy The Inbetweeners.

The venue, in Blackhorse Lane, was the backdrop for most of an episode of the Channel 4 show, which was shown on Tuesday.

However Standard regulars who watched the broadcast will have struggled to recognise the building, bathed as it was in startling bright lights and posters by the programme makers - who also represented it as a den of sin and drug taking! Goodness.

Amusingly, the door to the women's toilets was also used as a fake entrance to the building, presumably for lofty artistic reasons.

Anyhoo, normal service resumes there this weekend with some cracking shows.

On Thursday (September 23) excellent comedy rock Gods The Maharajas play a headline set.

The gig, organised by promoters Club Bus Wind, also features slots from unsigned bands Sons of the Malt, Traffic Lights and Silent.

Entry is £5 with a band flyer, or £6 without, with doors opening around 8pm.

Tribute act Absolute Bowie plays there on Friday (September 24). Doors open at 8pm and tickets are £9.

Over in Essex, the Square in Harlow plays host to Wanstead grunge band Bleech on Thursday (September 23).

They're there supporting headline rock act Magna Saga.

Tickets are £4 and doors open at 8pm. However entry is for over 16s only.

Also in Essex, the Waltham Abbey Folk Club in Brooker Road has a Singaround jam night on Monday (September 27).

Entry is £1.50p and it starts at 8.30pm.

The Stowaways featuring Liz Fletcher play the Plough Inn, on Wood Street in Walthamstow, on Thursday (September 23).

The gig, organised by E17 Jazz, will feature a mixture of classics and standards.

Admission is £5, and doors open at eight for an 8.30pm start.

Andy Irvine plays the pub on Sunday (September 26) as part of Walthamstow Folk Club's weekly night.

It's £6 entry, or £5 for concession and it starts at 7.30pm.
