Sound Advice: The Candy Runts are close to victory

THE Ryan O'Reilly Band headlines the North Star pub in Leytonstone on Thursday (May 26).

The band play a mix of blue and folk with Irish and Americana influences.

Support comes from Swedish indie popster I'm Kingfisher, otherwise known as Thomas Jonsson.

The music starts around 8.30pm and entry is free, although donations are welcome.

The Square music venue in Harlow holds the final of its unsigned battle of the bands 'Rock Contest' on Sunday (May 29).

The finalists are Kulaks, The Candy Runts and F.S.I.

Entry is £5 and open for all ages.

Doors are at 8pm.

The multi-talented Crownstreet play Loughton Folk Club this Thursday (May 26).

Entry is £2 and doors open at 8pm.

It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road, and there's a £1 discount for members.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club at the local Royal British Legion hosts a Singaround jam night on Monday night (May 30).

It costs £1.50p and doors are at 8.30pm.

It's Open Mic time again at Ye Olde Rose and Crown pub in Walthamstow's Hoe Street next Wednesday (June 1).

Always an entertaining night, the music gets going from 8.30pm but potential performers are advised to arrive by 9.45pm to be sure of getting a spot.

It's in the main bar and is free.

Walthamstow Cricket Club also has an Open Mic night with Jerry Spangles on Saturday evening (May 28). Entry is open to all.

Meanwhile Wanstead band Bleech continue their progress towards fame with a show at The Fighting Cocks in Kingston next Tuesday night (May 31).
