Sound Advice: A veritable parade of folk this week

TOM and Barbara Brown play Waltham Abbey Folk Club at a show this Monday (June 13).

The duo play songs rooted in the musical traditions of the West Country with a wide range of instruments.

It costs £5 entry and is at the Royal British Legion headquarters in Brooker Road.

Doors are at 8.30pm.

Meanwhile over in east London, Wiltshire based singer songwriter Talis Kimberley performs at Walthamstow Folk Club on Sunday (June 12).

It's at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub in Hoe Street.

Her songs cover everything from mythology to environmental issues.

Doors open at 7.30pm and admission is £6, or £5 for concessions.

Viper Central headline the What's Cookin' night at the North Star pub in Leytonstone this Thursday (June 9).

These guys are from Vancouver and play a mix of bluegrass and other old-time genre tunes.

Support comes from the Black Oil Brothers, who hail from Chicago and play “boot stompin' blues”.

The music starts from 8pm and entry is free, although donations are welcome.

For some energetic rock, the Square in Harlow plays host to a trio of up and coming unsigned acts on Thursday (June 9).

They are Minerva, Finisher and I See Atlantis.

Doors are at 8pm. It's £4 or free if you're a Square member.

Entry is for over 16s only.

The talented Steve O'Kane and Fiona McBain are the guests of Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (June 9).

Entry is £3, with a £1 discount for members.

It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road and doors are at 8pm.

In other news, the Red Lion pub is due to reopen in Leytonstone High Road on Wednesday June 15.

Its owners say they are considering holding live music there in future, so one to watch out for.
