Sound Advice: Return of the East Side Jazz Club

THE East Side Jazz Club in Leytonstone returns from its summer break with a show from award-winning pianist and singer Liane Carroll.

Liane has toured and performed with artists including Paul McCartney and Gerry Rafferty, and has scooped gongs at the BBC Jazz Awards, Ronnie Scott Awards and the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Award for 'musician of the year'.

The gig, next Tuesday (September 20), will see Liane supported by Roger Carey on the electric bass and house drummer Clive Fenner on the skins.

The show is from 8.30pm until 11pm. It costs £6 on the door and is at the Lord Rookwood pub in Cann Hall Road.

Meanwhile over in E17, Backstreet Billy headline the Standard in Walthamstow on Thursday (September 15).

The group, known formerly as Billy Karloff and the Goats, are supported by punk rock act The Anoraks.

Entry is £6 and doors to the venue, in Blackhorse Lane, open around 8pm.

The night is organised by promoters Club Bus Wind.

Tribute band Bootleg Blondie play the hits of Debbie Harry and co. at the venue on Saturday (September 17).

Entry is £9 and doors are at 8pm ish.

Dramatic black-clad duo Reuben's Train bring their dark American country to Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (September 15).

These guys are known for their theatrically weird and wonderful songs backed by excellent guitar and banjo accompaniment.

Entry is £5. It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road and there's a £1 discount for members.

Robb Johnson performs at Walthamstow Folk Club's night at Ye Olde Rose and Crown on Sunday (September 18).

Doors to the acclaimed singer-songwriter's gig open at 7.30pm.

It costs £6, or £5 for concessions, and is at the pub in Hoe Street.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club has a Singaround jam night on Monday (September 19).

It costs £1.50p and starts at 8.30pm at the Royal British Legion HQ in Brooker Road.
