What might Waltham Forest be like after the oil runs out… After the oil runs out?! The "Peak Oil" theory is complex, but put simply it's based on the fact that each oil well that's dug only has a certain amount of oil in it.

If I listed all the snippets of conversation FCR (that's Fearless Chief Reporter, for those of you who have forgotten) and my other colleagues have told me are "not for the blog", I would probably have a fairly comprehensive indictment of the level of (in)sanity in this office.

Why was I up at midnight last week, cutting out fake book covers into shapes that would never fit a book? I was working on “Pulped Fiction”, my contribution to the State of the Borough exhibition, on the E17 Art Trail.

The title, if anyone is unsure, is a reference to the huge experiment going on underground on the Franco-Swiss border at this very moment, using the Large Hadron Collider, which may or may not cause a black hole that will swallow the earth. But on to less apocalyptic things.

This morning I’m pondering how we make our public spaces safer. Why? Because I wandered out to the farmer’s market, with my baby daughter, to discover the whole of Walthamstow town square and gardens cordoned off by police lines.

A beautiful listed building has been damaged and is being left to decay, putting the safety of its users at risk. Don’t worry, you may say, the council can order the owners to maintain it. Tough luck, it’s Waltham Forest Council’s own flagship library in Walthamstow town square.

A fire, an assault, the closure of the Stow and an inquest - it's been a busy couple of days in Waltham Forest.

I've several times, by members of the public, councillors and council officers been told that the people fighting to save the EMD/Granada, the Stow, the market, the William Morris Gallery and Vestry House Museum and against a massive Primark on the Arcade site are middle class (and therefore somehow ignorable).

Mayor Johnson once advocated hardline "Sharia law" for cycle thieves. Now it seems as if Waltham Forest Guardian readers want the same for pavement cyclists.
