THE body of a man found in Romford Road this morning was dragged beneath a bendy bus for approximately one mile from Ilford Town Centre.

The 21-year-old man, who has not yet been formally identified, alighted from the number 25 bus at the junction of Ilford High Road and Clements Road just after 5am.

It is thought the man then fell and became trapped under the wheels of the bus.

His body was dragged under the bus for around a mile and dislodged in Romford Road, just past the junction with Rabbits Road.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.

The area from Ilford High Road to Rabbits Road, off Romford Road, has been cordoned off and it is expected to remain closed for the next two or three hours.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Police are examining the bus involved and CCTV footage.

DS Mark Robson, from the Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath, said: "We are keen to speak to any passengers on the bus and also anyone who was in the area of Ilford High Road, at the junction with Clements Road, at approx 5am - this location is close to a branch of Barclays Bank.

"We would ask people to come forward and contact us with any information as soon as possible."
