A NEW school syllabus which will improve knowledge of different faiths has been launched.
The Waltham Forest agreed syllabus for religious education was launched at a presentation at Walthamstow Assembly Hall.
The syllabus was created by the Standing Advisory Committee on Religious Education (SACRE), local faith communities and EduAction and does not recognise that any religion is better than any other.
It hopes to educate children so that they grow up to be unprejudiced adults.
EduAction director of schools Eleanor Schooling, told the meeting that the syllabus was a great achievement which reflected the many faiths in the borough.
She said: "It enables children and young people to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and supports the growth of young adults who have positive attitudes." But the syllabus will only be taught to children in maintained schools and Church of England schools, following a deal with the dioceses.
Other specialist faith schools will be exempt.
