SPOTLIGHT ON WALTHAMSTOW: What do you think of the market?

AS part of the Guardian's Spotlight on Walthamstow series of features, CARL BROWN asks traders what they think of the current state of the High Street market.

Larry Goldstein, 53, cuddly toy stallholder, said: “It is very cheap, definitely value for money, which is why people come here from a long way away.

“But there is too many parking restrictions and too much crime on the High Street too.”

(EL19136-13) David Frett, 61, fruit and veg stallholder, said: "Its the characters that make the market.

"Walthamstow market won't die on its feet, its the local community.”

You can get a bit of everything from pairs of pants to bowls of bananas."

(EL19136-5) Pathal Shahil, 30, silks stall worker, said: “"Its hard work, but its good and I enjoy it.

“Sometimes its really busy and sometimes its quieter."

(EL19136-6) Shakir Ahmad, 32, watches stallholder, said: “The market is important for Walthamstow, it is cheaper than shops and offers more choice.

“I enjoy serving all the different people and talking to them.”

(EL19136-7) Khawar Pervaiz, 47, pots and pans stallholder, said: “The market is doing okay, but everyone will tell yopu that the rents are still very high, which puts people off.”

(EL19136-8) Chris Seethanna, 44, bedding and duvets stallholder, said: “I haven't been here for very long, I was a minicab driver before this.

“I like it here, I enjoy talking to lots of people every day.”
