Woodford Under-15s suffered a 19-5 defeat away to Braintree in the opening round of Essex League Two on Saturday.
Woodford started well with their big pack winning the early exchanges and Euan Fay and Max Venditti driving at the defence.
After several minutes of pressure, Woodford had to scrabble back to defend on their own 22 with cover tackles from Haaris Sohoye and Alex Marks.
Braintree quickly recycled the ball and passed along the line for a score in the left corner which was converted to make it 7-0.
The two teams threw everything at each other as the half went on but gradually Woodford worked the ball to the opposition line and at a second scrum, Jed West picked up from the back to drive over on the blind side to reduce the deficit to 7-5.
Woodford soaked up some pressure but conceded a line-out and a mistake behind the goal line was pounced on by Braintree for their second score.
A Woodford drive from a line-out saw Euan Fay go over the try line but he was held up.
Facing the wind in the second half, Woodford kept the ball in hand and again crossed the try line with an angled run from Alex Marks but play was called back for a knock on.
Both teams had moments in the second half but Woodford’s undoing was a hasty defence kick across the field that Braintree swallowed up and darted over for the final score of the match.
