Two promising footballers from Roding Valley High School are hoping to help fire Essex to National Cup glory after being selected from hundreds of trialists to play for the county Under-14 team.

Harry Francis and Conner Turrell, both 13, were recommended for trials by the Loughton-based school and since making it through have played in matches against Bedfordshire, Sussex and Surrey.

The pair have helped Essex win three of their opening four matches in the tournament and Francis has scored three goals already, two coming in one game against Sussex.

Francis, who lives in Woodford Green, plays in midfield and is more of a creative player while Turrell, who is based in Epping, is a tall, commanding central defender.

Roding Valley High School PE teacher Keith Bailey said: “This particular age group is very strong – we had a few players go to the trials and Harry and Conner did well enough to make it through.

“It’s a step up for them to play for the county but we’ve had very good reviews from their coaches on how they’ve played in the games so far.

“It’s great for the school and great for the boys too so we’re really chuffed.”
