Woodford Green with Essex Ladies Athletics Club finished third in the Met League Cross Country table after a strong performance in the final fixture at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday.

Green saved their best until last as they closed their fastest 12 runners in the top 81 positions at the Shepherd’s Bush venue.

Tom Phillips brushed off his tag as a track runner to cross the line, for the first time in this competition, as Green’s fastest finisher in 11th.

Martyn Cryer, who is training for a marathon, was next in for the club in 21st before Angus Holford came 36th.

Hot on Holford’s heels was Kevin Murphy in 38th and close behind was James Stockings, who finished 41st and immediately after came Tomaz Plibersek in 42nd.

Donatis Tumaitis continued his encouraging form with a 46th-place finish and Harold Wyber, who is still recovering from injury, came 58th.

Bertie Powell made it 50 consecutive Met League finishes in the club’s top 12 and he managed to overcome some footwear problems to end up 64th overall.

Robbie Cox struggled with injuries at the start of the season but he continues to make an encouraging recovery as he finished in 75th position.

Jim Roche was not far behind in 78th while Woodford’s 12th man was CJ Shepherd in 81st.
