The term ‘losing well’ seems to be often used by the footballing fraternity. The fact is we did lose, but still gave the now League 1 champions a close-run encounter – so that term is justified on this occasion.

On another day, we might have run up a cricket score. Despite the rather flattering two-goal victory margin, there was little to choose between either side in a memorable Bank Holiday clash.

Despite Wolves having sealed promotion a couple of weeks ago, I could sense an uneasiness amongst their large travelling faithful.

And, if so, it was justified. Only 30 months ago the visitors had topped the Premier League – admittedly right at the start of the season – but since then the club has been in free fall – only now to be showing signs of recovery.

But, by the way the O’s attacked them, especially in a ‘golden’ 35-minute period after the interval, it makes you wonder how they will fare at the next level.

By the same token – and as we all found out later in the afternoon when Yeovil’s somewhat inevitable relegation from the Championship was all but confirmed – Orient will have to exceed themselves each and every week should they also make the step-up via the play-offs lottery.

And the form could be better – one win in eight is hardly promotion-worthy. Furthermore, with Preston and Rotherham our main rivals in the quest for a third or fourth place spot – meaning an away play-off first-leg – it couldn’t be tighter.

However, through the medium of live TV, the nation was able to see just how good the O’s are especially after the break.

That’s not to say that our closest rivals wouldn’t be quaking in their boots, but if it hadn’t been for the brilliance of Wolves' rightful man-of-the-match, Carl Ikeme, we could have been sending out an even more positive message.

Tranmere, who still need points for survival, certainly won’t be rolling over when they make the long trip to East London this coming Saturday.

However, if the O’s can put on a show similar to the Gillingham mauling of the other weekend, then we won’t be a million miles away from recording another vital win.

Up the O’s,

Keep the faith.
