Ongar resident Mark Cavendish was narrowly beaten to first place in the fifth stage of the Tour of Turkey.
The 28-year-old Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider was out-sprinted to the line by Italian Elia Viviani, finishing second.
Viviani timed his dash to the line perfectly, beating Cavendish by a bike length to secure first place.
Cavendish began his sprint with 200m left, only to be out beaten by Cannondale's Viviani.
Yesterday Cavendish completed a hat-trick of stage wins.
