Leyton Orient defender Scott Cuthbert says the players back under-fire manager Russell Slade 110 per cent and believes the O’s have the quality to overcome their slow start to the season.

A 2-0 defeat at home to ten-man Colchester United on Saturday has left Slade on the brink of being dismissed, with president Francesco Becchetti informing the manager – via sporting director Mauro Milanese – he has one game to save his job.

The O’s travel to Notts County on Tuesday in what could be Slade’s final match in charge of the east London outfit – if they cannot overcome Shaun Derry’s 14th-place Magpies.

Cuthbert said: We can’t focus on that. At the end of the day, we back the manager 110 per cent and that’s the truth. Everyone from the goalkeeper to the subs, we back the manager and we will be doing our all every game.

“We give it our all to do the manager justice. We know he works hard and we know (assistant manager) Nuge (Kevin Nugent) and (goalkeeping coach) Deardo (Kevin Dearden) work hard behind the scenes and they have been for the last three or four seasons at this club and done a fantastic job.”

He added: “We can only focus on what we can do on the pitch and come Tuesday we look to win every match. We will be going in there and trying to get three points against Notts County away and that is all we are focussing on.”

Defeat against the U’s leaves Leyton Orient a place and a point outside of the League 1 relegation zone after six games, less than four months after narrowly missing out on a place in the Championship after losing in the play-off final at Wembley.

However the former Celtic defender says it is not the place of the players to question the decision of owner Becchetti – who bought the club from long-term owner Barry Hearn in the summer.

Said Cuthbert: “The owner is the owner and the owner can make a decision when and where he sees fit. But, like I said, that is not up to the players to decide that or even discuss that.

“We’ve got to do our jobs on the pitch and as players we have got the opportunity on Tuesday to turn this bad result into a positive and it could be the start of a good run and that is what we are hoping for.

“We have got the team spirit, togetherness and quality – and that is the most important thing – to do well in this league and I believe every single person in that changing room is aiming to do one thing – and that is to do make this right.”
