Megan Penfold won the Under-13 Sussex Pentathlon Championships in Sutton on Sunday and will step up to Under-15 level in her next competition.

The 12-year-old won four of the five events, only finishing second in the 800m, to win with an overall score of 2,605.

Penfold, who is 13 next week, won the long jump with a distance of 4.52m before overcoming a strong head wind to secure first place in the 70m hurdles with a time of 11.75.

There was further success for the Orion Harriers athlete in the shot put, where Penfold emerged victorious with a distance of 8.41m.

Win number four was secured by leaping a distance of 1.47m in the high jump, before the day’s final event, the 800m.

Penfold won her heat in a time of 2.40 but in the other heat, the winner crossed the line in 2.35 – enough to beat the youngster to the win and deny her a clean sweep.

Next up for Penfold is the Under-15 East of England Championships at the end of the month, where she will move up an age group for the first time.

The hurdles are the only event which will see any change, with the race five metres longer, the hurdles half a metre further apart and the bars raised a notch. But coach Bob Corbett is confident Penfold will prosper and said: “Tall girls will handle them and Megan is a tall girl.”
