Crostyx Men’s Firsts picked up their first win of the new season on Saturday by beating Colchester 2-1 after three narrow defeats to open the new season.

The game began cautiously with both sides sounding the other out, and aside from a couple of early Colchester forays, Crostyx controlled the contest early on.

However, it was Colchester who took a 1-0 lead into the break, turning over possession to punish Styx.

Re-invigorated after the re-start, Crostyx quickly pulled level. A short corner was played out left to Joe Whitehead, who coolly drove into the Colchester net to level the scores up at 1-1.

Crostyx began to take control of the contest and a second arrived when another short corner was awarded late in the second half.

A fizzing ball out wide was stopped dead by Tim Watson, who in turn picked out Andreas Vassilliou to dribble beyond a couple of defenders and fire home the winner.

Next up is a trip to Kings Lynn Firsts.

Crostyx Men’s Seconds were beaten 3-0 at high-flying Wapping Fifths at the Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park.

Only a combination of poor finishing from hosts Wapping and inspired goalkeeping from Tom Miller in the Crostyx goal kept the score goalless in the early stages.

However, slowly but surely, Crostyx began to settle into the game and forced a good save from the home goalkeeper.

After that wake-up call, Wapping responded ruthlessly, taking the lead following an incisive passing move.

And, in the second period, the strength of Wapping began to show as the home side started to dominate the tie, grabbing their second.

The home side’s best move of the game then yielded a third as Wapping put the game to bed in swashbuckling fashion.

The Seconds face Colchester Seconds next week, whilst Wapping travel to Old Southendian Seconds.

Crostyx Men’s Thirds were beaten 2-0 at home to Waltham Forest but remain in second spot in Division SE7.

The home side were soon on the back foot and caught out of position after one of many passes went astray. This led to some fast interplay from the visitors and subsequently the first goal being scored.

However, the goal had a galvanising effect on Styx as they went on the offensive. But time and time again passes went straight to the opposition as attack after attack broke down with very little meaningful play in the ‘D’.

Waltham Forest countered at will although any attack was snuffed out by the defence. At half time the score remained 1-0 to Waltham Forest.

A lack of penetration in the ‘D’ after the break and continued poor passing ultimately put paid to Styx’s efforts to equalise. Waltham Forest countered down the exposed left flank and passed the ball to the top of the ‘D’ where the unmarked striker slotted home a second.

From then on, the game became stretched as Crostyx tried valiantly to claw their way back into the contest, but to no avail, as their best chance of the game - a full-blooded shot that bounced off the left post - summed up a frustrating Styx performance.

On Saturday the Men’s Thirds travel to Chelmsford Men’s Fourths.
