New Leyton Orient manager Fabio Liverani insists there were plenty of positives despite a 2-1 home defeat to Peterborough in his opening game in charge.

An injury hit team produced a decent first-half performance with Shaun Batt making it 1-1 at the break. But Erhun Otzumer's free-kick after 47 minutes sent them to defeat after a lacklustre second-half showing.

The O's slipped into the relegation zone in League One but the new Italian boss took encouragement from his opening match.

Liverani, who was translated by new goalkeeper coach Rob Gagliardi, said: "There were many positive aspects from the game. We conceded very little and they scored from a few chances. I think we deserved to draw so there are lots of positives from the match.

He added: "There are eight players injured and one suspended at this time so it's difficult to say what is good and what is bad. But when we have a full squad then it will be different."

When asked if he was disappointed with the lack of creativity when chasing the game in the second half, Liverani said: "In the second half Shaun Batt was really tired and Jay Simpson was coming back from injury so we didn't have many options in terms of players.

"In fact it was the first game for a young player in Ayomide Adeboyejo as well so it was partly due to this reason. Losing a goal two minutes into the second half was also bad for us psychologically. That's why we created less in the second half compared with the first."

It was the Italian's first experience of English football as a manager and he admitted he expected a physical confrontation with the Posh.

Liverani said: "There was lots of physical football and one v ones which was what I expected. I expected this physical approach to the game."

The former Genoa coach has signed a two and a half year contract at Brisbane Road and he insisted the reception from Orient fans convinced him he has made the right decision to move to England.

He said: "I was really happy with how I was welcomed from the supporters and the other members of the staff.

"I am really convinced that I made the right choice to come to Leyton Orient. It's a long-term project and I will give everything for this."
