John Mackie will captain an Orient Legends XI in a charity match against the Men United celebrity team to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK at the end of May.

The match has been organised by Orient youth coach and ambassador for the charity, Errol McKellar, who is a prostate cancer survivor and the match will take place at the Matchroom Stadium on Sunday, May 31 at 3pm.

Former managers Martin Ling and Dean Smith will be in charge whilst Mackie will have a host of Orient legends in his team. Glynn Garner, Matt Lockwood, Donny Barnard, Justin Miller, Aiden Palmer, Michael Simpson, Daryl McMahon, Joe Keith, Shane Tudor, Lee Steele, Gary Alexander, Craig Easton, Gabriel Zakuani, Efe Echanomi and Kevin Lisbie will all feature.

Mackie told the club website: "The anticipation and excitement has started already. It will be great to get everyone back together and to pull on that Orient shirt again. I was with Gary Alexander when we found out about it and we were both buzzing so I sent a text to all the lads after I’d spoken to Errol and the gaffer [Martin Ling] and got so many replies straightway saying ‘yes’.

"There’s only a couple that can’t make it and they are gutted. It’ll be great to have Martin and Dean back managing us and Martin deserves it as he should still be managing the Football League in my opinion."

He added: "Errol is a great man and a real character," he said. "When I was at Orient he was always around the place and did so much for the club. When I found out a couple of years ago that he had prostate cancer I was gutted and it always seems to be the good people that get hit with things like that.

"I knew he could beat it though and what he has done for charity since has been remarkable. I can’t speak highly enough of him and he’s not a bad mechanic too, he’s looked after my van for a few years now!

"It’d be great though to see as many people there as possible to raise as much money as we possibly can for charity."

McKellar said: "It should be a great day for all the family with a lot going on and all for a fantastic cause. Prostate Cancer UK are a charity close to my heart after everything I’ve been through and I’m committed to raising money and awareness for the great work they do.

"I can’t wait to see the Orient legends back out on the Brisbane Road pitch and I’m hoping we get a big crowd to cheer them on."

The Prostate Cancer UK Men United side will be made up of celebrity stars and former pros.
