Redbridge are all but relegated from Isthmian Division One North after they were beaten 5-0 by AFC Sudbury on Saturday.

The loss means Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s side are now three points from safety ahead of their final fixture. The Motormen would require a win and a 12-goal swing above them in order to avoid the drop.

A run of six defeats from their last seven games has dragged the Motormen into the mire and bar a miracle, they look set to tumble out of step four.

Contrary to the final score, it was Redbridge who started the brightest and thrice went close to opening the scoring. Vinny Murphy and Gavin Cockman, twice, almost netted for the Motormen, who were made to pay for their failure to convert any of their early openings.

Luke Callander then put the home side ahead after 12 minutes by lobbing Mark Parker, whose afternoon got worse when he was dismissed for bringing down Craig Parker just two minutes later.

Murphy took on goalkeeping duties for the Motormen and James Baker tucked away the spot-kick with ease.

Sam Clarke then added the Suds’ third ten minutes later as the contest slipped away from the beleaguered Motormen.

A fourth goal arrived just before half time, Kris Newby firing past Murphy with an effort which clipped the post before nestling into the far corner. Murphy did, however, make a good stop to deny Callander a second just before the break.

Half time saw a second change of goalkeeper, with Murphy returning to midfield and Cockman donning the gloves for the second half.

The change had the desired effect – up to a point – as Sudbury scored just once more in the second period.

The final goal arrived on the hour as Parker glided through the middle of the Redbridge defence and scored.

Waltham Abbey also shipped five but fared marginally better as they lost 5-2 at play-off hopefuls Thurrock.

The Abbotts took the lead after seven minutes via Louis Bristow but were soon pegged back when Charlie Christou converted from Charlie Stimson’s centre.

Stimson was the provider once more when Ross Wall charged through the Abbey defence and lifted the ball over goalkeeper James May for number two.

Jason Hallett continued his impressive personal season by heading home his 28th of a prolific season to equalise after 47 minutes.

But the goal sparked Thurrock into life and goals from Stimson, Lewis Spence and Les Thompson made sure of the points for the Fleet.

Waltham Abbey host Maldon and Tiptree on Saturday.

In the Essex Senior League Premier Division, Waltham Forest were crushed 4-1 at home by Barking.

Three goals in the first ten minutes did much of the damage, with Jose Agua getting one back late on.
