Wapping Hockey Club has been shortlisted for England Hockey’s Club Of The Year award and their Men’s Seconds have been nominated as Team Of The Year.

The club enjoyed one of its best seasons with more than a third of their outdoor league teams – six out of 16 – winning promotion and its indoor men’s team also going up. And the men’s Seconds celebrated an incredible 12-match winning streak which helped them gain early promotion into East Division One, scoring more than 80 goals in the process.

Chairman Stuart Burnside enthused: “Modern sports clubs deliver more than just match play for seasoned players. We are increasing borough physical activity levels through provision of opportunities at all ability levels, with our free Back To Hockey programme for beginners being particularly important in helping the semi-active rediscover competitive sport.”

Men’s Seconds coach Steven Turner said: “I am extremely proud of what the guys have achieved this year. We gave them clear objectives and worked hard on developing game plans at the start of the year and the guys have responded exceptionally well.

“The team dominated a relatively tough league on the pitch but also off the pitch. The team has contributed lot to this fantastic club and is very grateful to the support and trust the club has put in the team after a slow start to the season.”
