Five-time world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan needs just one more frame on Monday to reach the quarter-finals after winning seven of eight frames against Matthew Stevens on Sunday in an imperious display.

His ill-fitting shoes earned most of the attention following his first-round win over compatriot Craig Steadman, while on Saturday night his cue visibly bent as he crashed it against the table in frustration at a missed pot at the start of his second-round encounter.

It's almost unthinkable though, that Essex's finest will not be in the quarter-final for the 11th time in 12 years when play resumes on Monday after showing title-winning form, with back-to-back centuries either side of the mid-session interval the highlight.

O'Sullivan held a 5-3 overnight lead and made a storming start to the afternoon session, but his momentum was halted when he went in off with a break of 63 on the board.

But he was only away from the table briefly and finished off Stevens to move 6-3 ahead.

Frame 11 was a scrappy affair that took O'Sullivan 25 minutes to claim – a marathon by the part-time Woodford Green with Essex Ladies runner's standards.

Plucky Stevens was not prepared to give up without a fight though, and cleared the table with a break of 55 to show he was not just content to make up the numbers.

But reigning UK champion O'Sullivan took an 8-4 lead into the mid-session interval, rattling in a century inside nine minutes and picked up where he left off with a magnificent 139 break – his third ton of the match.

The Rocket lacked the same fluidity in frame 14, but still was able to open up a six-frame lead to roar towards the last eight and a clash with Stuart Bingham.

Stevens, twice a finalist in Sheffield, opened up a 36-point lead in frame 15. But the Welshman missed a red down the rail and O'Sullivan did not need a second invitation to kill off his opponent.

Despite holding a commanding lead, the perfectionist in O'Sullivan saw him let out some frustration with a hand gesture after missing a red in the final frame of the session, for which he was warned by the referee, but will not be fined.

Yet he was soon back at the table with a break of 61 leaving him on the brink of a quarter-final place.
